Description

This is a submission to the contest on the group :icondragontraditionalart:.
Theme: Oriental Dragon

This ancient dragon patrols the lands following the storms from which it gains power using its orb to harness the storms energy. It is said that the orb it carries glows with a blue aura when a storm is near and the locals have observed the dragon holding the orb into the sky and lightning being gathered to it which has earned the beast the name 'Storm Catcher'.

For this artwork I used coloured pencils for the dragon, the grass and the orb, while the sky was done with watercolour paint with white acrylic for the lightning. The dragon design itself was based on the traditional description of the oriental dragon such as tiger paws, deer horns, eagle talons, demons eyes etc.

This has been the first deviation I have submitted that I have done a proper background for as I haven't been that comfortable with doing backgrounds and I usually concentrate on the character more. I am very pleased with the dragon design itself and enjoyed creating it.

Your dragon is pretty detailed, every scale well drawn; Your lightning also gave a correct atmosphere of an incoming storm (yeah right last week I just walked in a storm…). However, your dragon generally doesn’t look very oriental – from its head to the tummy, chest and limbs (although you got the “tiger paws, deer horns, eagle talons, demons eyes” parts correctly). Your ground is a little bit too plain, too (adding a tree or grass/flowers can be a good improvement); most importantly, you shaded your scales but you forgot that your whole character needs shading too. As magic power is usually a strong source of light, you should give your dragon a shadow and a dark side on its back.
